CARE, A SIGNIFICANT WOMEN'S PROBLEM
According to Personnel Journal, eight million Americans are caregivers, and 75 percent are women. Of the 75 percent of women who care for an elderly parent, more than 50 percent are employed outside the home and raising children. what is the impact Fifty-eight percent missed work due to caregiving? They give up holidays and social life and suffer from anxiety and depression. Let's take a look at the risk of long-term care and especially how it affects women.
LONG-TERM CARE RISK
Unfortunately, until recently, only a small percentage of working Americans planned for long-term care. This is unfortunate considering the considerable risk involved.
48.6% of all people aged 65 and over will spend some time in a nursing home
71.8% of people aged 65 and over may require some form of home healthcare
The probability of long-term care for married couples is the most significant. Seven (7) out of ten (10) couples age 65 and older can expect one spouse to need long-term care.
Assuming the norm, if both spouses are of the same age and health, actuaries tell us that the average woman will live seven (7) years longer than the average man. Women tend to marry men who are older; therefore, the husband's health may begin to fail earlier than the wife's. After more than a decade with her husband out of the picture, she may be alone, possibly in poor health. The family finances must be sufficient to finance at least seven years of extra housing for the lady of the house.
