HHAs cannot survive without a steady flow of patient referrals, especially in areas where there are a number of HHAs competing for the same number of patients.

There are several good reasons why it is harder to get referrals from layoff planners:

1. Discharge planners are bombarded with home health sales reps daily as competition for patients increases. In the US, there was a 75% increase in the number of agencies. Do you see why hospital discharge planners and JVP are overwhelmed? Many hospitals have new policies that prohibit home healthcare sales representatives from calling or joining discharge planners because it takes up too much of their time.

2. With the explosion of home healthcare facilities and patient choice and freedom of choice rules, it is becoming more difficult for discharge planners to recommend certain agencies.
