  Diagnosed Gestational Diabetes

In February 2018, the Journal of Maternal, Fetal, and Neonatal Medicine reported on a study from Soroka University Medical Center and Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (BGU) in Israel. Researchers there found a link between mothers who were treated for gestational or pregnancy-related diabetes and the eye disease present in their children.,
Researchers there found a link between mothers who were treated for gestational or pregnancy-related diabetes and the eye disease present in their children.,

A total of 238,622 pregnancies were included in the study. Of these, 9,601 patients, or 4.0 percent were diagnosed with gestational diabetes and were treated with diet alone. One percent of women were diagnosed with high blood sugar and treated with medication. Children of medically treated mothers had more eye diseases than children of non-diabetic mothers and gestational diabetics treated only with diet.

From the above results, the researchers concluded that gestational diabetes treated with medication increases the risk of developing eye problems in children.

About 9 percent of pregnancies are complicated by the mother developing diabetes during pregnancy. Hormones produced by the placenta counteract the insulin produced in the mother's pancreas and increase the amount of sugar available to the fetus. When placental hormones outweigh insulin to such an extent, gestational diabetes results.

Fortunately, most cases can be controlled with diet and exercise. In November 2017, the Journal of Diabetes reported on an analysis of studies showing the effectiveness of lifestyle changes in the treatment of gestational diabetes. Researchers from the Hospital de Clinicals de Porto Alegre and several other research institutions in Brazil pooled eight studies together and analyzed them as if they were one large study. Pregnant mothers undergoing supervised exercise or physical activity education showed better improvements in fasting blood sugar than mothers who received only usual care.
