Blood Sugar Control

Blood Sugar Control

For some time, type 2 diabetes has been associated with pancreatic cancer and several other types of cancer. It should come as no surprise that poorly controlled blood sugar levels are linked to pancreatic cancer and, to a lesser extent, various cancers. This conclusion

was reached by a group of scientists who studied type 2 diabetes and cancer at the Sheba Medical Center in Israel and several other research facilities in Israel and the United States.

Their study, published in October 2018 in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, included 440,000 participants diagnosed with type 2 diabetes aged 21 to 89.
pancreas,
colon,
breast,
lung,
prostate,
liver and
all sites.
26,887 or 6 percent of participants were diagnosed with cancer. There was a weak association between HbA1c levels and cancer risk for most sites, but the pancreas was an exception. Those participants with type 2 diabetes with high HbA1c levels had a 26 to 51 percent higher risk of developing cancer in their pancreas.
From the above results, researchers suggested that early symptoms of pancreatic cancer may lead to high HbA1c levels. Further research could resolve the cause-and-effect dilemma.

In a study where people diagnosed with type 2 diabetes were to be screened for pancreatic cancer, they had to be cancer-free at enrollment. They could then be checked again from time to time for signs of pancreatic cancer and their risk of developing the disease could be compared with their HbA1c levels.
